KBSC Competitive Team FAQs

What is Competitive team soccer and how does it benefit you?

Key Biscayne Soccer Club (KBSC) Competitive Program is for players with a strong love for the game, above average skills and a strong drive to develop their soccer abilities to their full potential. Boys and girls that are ready to play Competitive soccer are ready to make the commitment to play a 10-month schedule and play in leagues, tournaments and cups in Miami, across Florida and Nationally.  All coaches are Licensed by the USSF or equivalent organizations.

How will my son or daughter be picked for a team?

KBSC will have open tryouts in June for the fall, winter and spring. All players are evaluated during these tryouts by the Directors and team coaches and placed on the appropriate teams based on their talent, cognitive ability, competence and character.

How do I determine the right age group for my child?

Players will tryout based on their birth year. For the 2020-2021, the youngest age group from travel soccer will be players born in 2012. We will aim to have teams for following birth years: 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, and 2002. Players may be grouped together in different birth years for example; player born in 2002 may be grouped with the players born in 2003.

Can my child try out in a different age group?

Players cannot tryout or play in an age group for which they are too old. Even if they miss the cut-off by one day, they cannot play down in an age group. You year is determined by your birth year. Players can play up with an older age group, at the discretion of the Directors and Coaches, if it is determined that the player's soccer development is at the appropriate level. Players must receive approval from the Technical Director to play up in an older age group team.

How many players will make each team?

Different age groups in travel soccer play with different game formats and have different roster sizes. Coaches usually carry fewer players than the maximum allowed optimizing players playing time in games. The following are the roster sizes for the different age groups in KBSC travel soccer program.

U9 & U10 Teams (7 vs. 7 game format): 10-12 players on each team

U11 & U12 Teams (9 vs. 9 game format): 12-14 players on each team

U13 - U15 Teams (11 vs. 11 game format): 16-18 players on each team

U16 - U18  Teams (11 vs. 11 game format): 16-22 players on each team

What should my player wear to tryouts?

Returning players should wear their travel team uniform, Elite team players should wear their blue home team game jersey and Premier and Select should wear their White away game jersey. New players should wear a White jersey and dark shorts. They will be provided a practice penny for Tryouts.

What should each player bring?

Parents will have to fill out a contact form and waiver if they did not register online. Copies will be available at the tryout tent when you register, and we'll try to make them available online.

What are the Coaches Looking For?

Often times, players and parents want to know what a coach is looking for in a player. It is difficult to truly see all that a player has to offer in just two or three sessions. However, the tryouts will be structured in a way to allow all participants a chance to showcase their talents. Here is a quick explanation of each criteria:

Competence/Technical Ability: Technical skills: passing, dribbling, shooting, first touch, defending, etc.

Athletic Ability: Speed, quickness, agility, strength, body control, etc.

Cognitive Awareness: Tactical skills: positioning, communication, decisions on and off the ball, etc.

Attitude/Work Ethic: We are looking for players who exhibit a positive attitude, take coaching points well, show good sportsmanship, and have an overall desire to improve as players.

Character: high work rate, team player, respectful, passionate leader, positive attitude, competitive and self-motivated.

Tryouts and bi-seasonal evaluations will we conducted and shared with the player and parents to track their annual development.

Should my child come to all tryout dates?

Tryouts are held three days and players should try to be attending them all -- the more time in front of the staff, the better. If your child cannot make one of the tryouts, it's not the end of the world, but please send an email to the coaches if you can't attend one day. The coaches understand that conflicts and illnesses occur.

Can my child get on a team at other times of the year?

Even after tryouts, many teams will re-evaluate players periodically. New players may arrive or a current player may leave the team during the year due to injury, disciplinary issues or because the family moves away. The Technical Director and Coaches may move players up to fill that spot.

How can I contact the coach(es) for my age group?

Coaches will be assigned in late May. If you have questions about a coach, you may contact the Director of Coaching, Claudio Nocco, at DOC@kbsoccer.com

When will I find out if I have made the team?

Players will begin to be notified after tryouts or in June if they are selected. Player notification will continue during and after tryouts. Players will be notified by email and will have one week to notify the club if they accept their selection. Each player will be asked to commit to the 10-month season and make a deposit payment in the amount of $350. By accepting your space on the team, you will be expected to pay the full registration fee. All registration fees are non-refundable. Parents will have the option to pay in full or make monthly payments which begin August 2020.

What if I don't make the team? Will I get feedback on how to improve my chances for the following season?

Yes.  Each player will receive an Evaluation Report. If you are not selected on the Competitive program, and ages 9-15, you can continue playing in our Intramural or JR Academy programs.

When does the season begin?

The season begins in August and finishes in May during the Memorial Day weekend.

When and where do we practice?

The teams will practice at various playing fields, depending on the age group:

  • KB K-8 School
  • MAST Academy
  • St. Agnes School
  • Village Green North and South

How many travel teams will the Key Biscayne Soccer Club have in my son's or daughter's age group?

The number of travel teams will vary from 1-3 teams per age group. These teams are tiered, according to skill level

  • Elite
  • Premier Blue
  • Premier White

How are the coaches selected for each team?

KBSC recruits and hires licensed coaches which are under the supervision of the Director of Coaching. All coaches are hired and paid by the KBSC. The coaches work for KBSC and are assigned teams to optimize player development. The coaching staff is evaluated each year by the Director of Coaching and may be rotated among the teams for maximum player development benefits.

How much time commitment is required?

The fall season begins in August and goes until mid-February. The Spring goes from February and ends in May. All teams practice 3 times per week and play league games on Saturdays and Sundays. Tournaments are played on holiday weekends and if the team advances out of the group stage, they can expect to play on Monday. Practice sessions vary by year:

2012/11: 1 Hour

2010/09: 1:15 Hours

2008-2005: 1:30 Hours

2005-2002: 1:45 Hours

Competitive players are expected to attend all team practices and games.

When are tournaments held?

Teams often play pre-season, mid-season or post-season tournaments (3-5 games during a 2 or 3-day weekend). Players are expected to be available to play in tournaments and State Cups.

How much does travel soccer cost?

Each player pays a player program fee to play travel soccer with KBSC.
